The Ultimate Knott’s Berry Farm Travel Guide

Knott’s Berry Farm General Information and History Questions

In this section, you will find the following questions answered: What is Knott’s Berry Farm? How was Knott’s berry farm started and how did it open?

Knott’s Berry Farm is a 160-acre amusement park in Buena Park, California, the park is owned by Cedar Fair and has been since 1990. The park was the 12th most visited theme park in North America in 2015. The theme park sits on the site of a former berry farm established by Walter Knott, Cordelia Knott, and their family.

knott’s berry farm ghost town area 1941

Right around 1920, the Knott family sold berries, berry preserves, and pies from a roadside stand along Route 39. The Knotts began selling fried chicken dinners in a tea room on the property in 1934, and the Knotts built several shops and other attractions to entertain visitors. Cordelia Knott’s cooking in Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant was essential to putting Knott’s Berry Farm on the map with the local community, and the ensuing crowds prompted the creation of even more tourist attractions. In 1940, Walter Knott began constructing a replica ghost town on the property.

The Knott family added several other attractions over the years and began charging admission to the attractions in 1968. In 1983, Knott’s Berry Farm added Camp Snoopy, which began the park’s present-day association with the Peanuts characters.

The Knott’s Family owned theme Park is sold to Cedar Fair in the 1990’s

In the 1990s, following the deaths of Walter and Cordelia Knott, their children sold the theme park to Cedar Fair and the family’s food business to ConAgra Foods, which subsequently sold it to J. M. Smucker. Cedar Fair has continued to expand the theme park, adding Knott’s Soak City in 1999 and adding new rides to the original park.

    A Legendary Attraction

The Calico Mine Ride, Knott’s first major ride, opened in Ghost Town in November 1960 and was quickly recognized as one of the world’s most immersive “dark rides.” The beloved attraction, designed by industry pioneer Bud Hurlbut, carries riders aboard ore cars on a real adventure through dimly lit tunnels of a working gold mine. The winding journey takes passengers to underground lakes, waterfalls, caverns filled with thousands of mysterious formations, chambers filled with steaming, bubbling pots, and geysers. At several points in the trip, riders find themselves along the rim of a sixty-five foot deep and ninety-foot wide scene filled with dozens of animated miners trying to strike it rich.

The attraction’s rustic wooden loading platform has been refreshed and now includes a “peek-in” similar to those found throughout Ghost Town, offering guests windows into the rich mining history of the 1850s on their way toward boarding the mine train car.

    Calico Railroad

The Calico Railroad has been in operation at Knott’s since January 12, 1952 and is an authentic Denver and Rio Grande Narrow Gauge train used in the early 1900s.
